The Advantages Of The Butterfly Valves

Among the various types of valves, we can find the so called butterfly valves. Why this name? Simply because this type of valves looks just like a butterfly. This is a valve that consists of a metal circular vane or disk, and it has a pivot axes at right angles, towards the direction of the material flow in a pipe. It is quick opening, and when this disk is rotated on a shaft, it will seal against seats in the valve's body.

The butterfly valves are used mainly to control the flow of materials. How is this flow controlled? It is actually quite simple. The valve disk turns on a diametrical axis, which is found inside a pipe, allowing the material to flow in just one direction. The movement is of 90 degrees or even less. The flow of gas or liquid material can also be permitted by two semicircular plates, hinged on a common spindle. Because of this special compact design, this valve will not allow any fluids, to become trapped, at the time the valve it closed. Unlike other types of valves, the butterfly valves are available on the market in several body styles or seal types. The most common type is the flange type. Commonly known as lug style, this valve can be held between any types of flanges. The lug style valves are made of metal, and have some inserts installed in the valve's holes. The valve can be installed between flanges that use a separate set of bolts for each and every flange. At the other pole, the wafer butterfly valves are installed between two flanges that studs or bolts. These two types of valves are not so different, yet many people buy it because of their price. It is well known that the wafer style, unlike the lug style, is cheaper and therefore used more commonly.

As all the other types of valves, the butterfly valves offer a series of advantages and disadvantages. The good thing is that, in this case there are more advantages, and less disadvantages. First, I should mention that this type of valves is used in many chemical services. And, because in some areas, the space is limited, the butterfly valves are very small, and therefore it is very easy to use it. So, if it is used for the proper application the butterfly valves will allow a really low level of material flow.
